Dr. Christiaan Barnard
He performed the first successful human-to-human heart transplant.
Recalling his experience of the surgery Dr. Barnard states,
“On Saturday, I was a surgeon in South Africa, very little known. On Monday, I was world renowned.”
His patient, Louis Washkansky, had an incurable heart disease. On December 3rd, 1967, Dr. Barnard had performed the transplant, in which, Washkansky had lived for 18 days longer, dying from pneumonia due to his suppressed immune system. Dr. Barnard’s contributions paved the way for surgeons around the world.
John Peter Mettauer
Dr. Mettauer is the first notable American plastic surgeon that performed the first cleft palate operation, using tools he designed himself.
Harold Gillies
Dr. Gillies is considered the father of plastic surgery. He performed the first skin graft surgery on Walter Yeo, a sailor in 1917.
Thomas Cronin
Dr. Cronin created a new breast implant device which was made from silicone. From this, silicon was used in many parts of the body.
